Macrat Selfie is a new-coined word used to refer to self-portrait form of photography primarily utilised for posting and sharing on social network sites. The origin of the word is not precisely known though it’s suspected to originate from Australia. Sadly, the captivating technology of smartphones has created a new form of death: selfie-kills. It can be concluded from studying reports of selfie-related deaths, the fatalities resulting from or occurring during a selfie capture could have been painlessly averted. But, the urge to get that perfect selfie and posting or sharing it on social media sites in exchange for views, likes, comments, and a large following, has led to a spike of selfie deaths. Furthermore, a careful investigation of the reported selfie-related deaths reveal three patterns:

A selfie-er’s obsession with capturing own photos rendering them oblivious of their surrounding, for instance, unaware of an oncoming train as their attention is fixed on the activity of taking a ‘perfect’ selfie on a railway line. The need to capture stunning photos foregoing the dangerous spot, or setting , the photos are taken e.g. on high-rise buildings, or whilst driving. The thrill of taking a dazzling selfie in a life-threatening setting, or with a fatal thing e.g. on top of skyscraper buildings, or with a live grenade.
