Some context is in order here, in terms of space and time. The Big Bang is estimated to have occurred about 13.7 or 13.8 billion years ago. So this galaxy is very close to one of the oldest entities whose light we could ever see. This is especially true considering the fact that light itself did not start forming until about a couple hundred million years after the Big Bang. If you do the math, you understand how close this telescope is getting us to the beginning of time.

The video, posted by the inimitable @thegalacticgal, provides us with a sense of the enormity of the discovery. “So….” contemplates user @adventuresofwildcody. “We could literally be looking at the oldest light in existence?” “As far as we know right now, yes,” replies @thegalacticgal. “You’re going to have to explain that ’light didn’t start forming until 200 million years after the Big Bang’ statement,” says @elimu_a. It seems @thegalacticgal is up for the challenge. “On it!” she says. “I’ll do a video.” “Sad part is, that galaxy probably doesn’t exist any more,” surmises @chriswithacam. “Crazy thing to think about is that we don’t exist any more,” writes @wickednights56. To which @bro_.rich hilariously replies, “Bro, go take your meds.” “The fact that the world isn’t talking about this everywhere is so upsetting,” vents @bizamanic. “This is what we’ve been waiting for! I’m so excited to see more!” Recommended for you
